Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year Cole Crusaders!
As we plan for a beginning like no other we have seen in the past, our focus will still be to ensure that our students and staff LEAD in all we do:
Learn with a growth mindset.
Engage in the Cole Community.
Develop positive relationships.
Normal is such a simple word and it is our goal at Cole to not only find our new normal this semester, but to use this time as a learning experience that will forever impact the learning environment. There will be new types of learning experiences that teachers will be piloting and much of what is learned will continue to be used in the future. While our Fall may not be “normal,” our learning will not only continue, but it will thrive. We can’t wait to move on to the next phase of learning under Covid-19 and we know, all returning and new students to Cole will be welcomed with open arms (from 6 feet away) to our community - we will continue to LEAD!
We are committed to maintaining the highest standards so that there will be no shortage of opportunities for your student to feel challenged on a daily basis with high quality instruction in addition to a wide variety of options to get connected to their school and fellow students.
Attached to this letter are copies of your student schedules that they will follow throughout the first semester. Remember that students are required to follow this schedule at home starting August 10th. All required materials were distributed on August 6th through August 8th. If you did not pick up Chromebooks, textbooks, and school supplies during those scheduled distribution times, please call the office immediately so that we can schedule a time for this. Also, please do not hesitate to call the office at (661) 946-1041 if you have any questions or concerns throughout our distance learning. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. We thank you for entrusting your students to our care and we are looking forward to a great school year. Go Crusaders!

Our first day of school will be Monday, August 10th but unlike the prior years, we will begin instruction through a Virtual Distance Learning Model, with all students engaging in their academic instruction from home.
What is Virtual Distance Learning? Students will be receiving daily online instruction through a Google Meets Classroom with their teacher while at home through the use of a Chromebook. They will also complete and submit all assignments through Google Classroom.
Will my student be provided with a Chromebook? Yes. All students will be issued a Chromebook on Aug. 6th, 7th, and 8th. I’ve included the schedule of when to pick up the chromebook below. It is very important everyone comes to pick up a Chromebook as very important information will be passed out as well and indicated below.
Will my student really need to be online everyday? Yes. Attendance will continue to be a big focus and daily student attendance will be taken by the teacher. If your student is not logged in to their Google Meets Classroom they will be marked absent.
When does my student need to be logged in? Daily. However, we have assigned each student to a teacher and a specific group (Group A, B, C). We have also created a very specific schedule for your student to follow that will let them know when they need to be logged in to live Google Meet sessions. *This schedule will be passed out during Chromebook Distribution.
How does my student log in? Your students username will be their assigned email address (First initial and last name with last 2 digits of their student ID @stu.eastsideusd.org) Example email@example.com. Your student’s password will be their sudent ID number. Example 502020.
What if my student has a technology issue? For any technology issues, please contact the office.
What if my child is ill or has a doctor’s appointment? Just like “normal” school, if your child is ill call the office to report the absence. We continue to ask that all doctor’s appointments be made after school hours, but during times like this, we understand this could be challenging.
What if I have questions for the teacher? Just like “normal” school, you can contact all teachers via phone, email, Aeries Communication, and Google Classroom Phone extensions and emails are provided below. We respectfully ask that you do not interrupt the classroom time while your student is logged in.
What supplies do I need to buy for my student? Every student will be given a free backpack with school supplies. *These backpacks will be passed out during the Chromebook distribution.
Will my student continue to receive Breakfast and Lunch? Yes. We will continue with our Meals on Wheels and daily meal distribution on the Cole campus from 10:30am -12:30pm. We’ve included plenty of time to pick up food in the student schedule. *The Meal on Wheels Schedule will be passed out during the Chromebook Distribution.
Will I still need to complete a First Day Packet? Yes. The First Day Packet will include much needed information that we need. Including the form for Free and Reduced lunch. They will need to be returned at any of our Meal on Wheels food distribution locations or dropped off back at the school. *These First Day Packets will be passed out during the Chromebook Distribution.
Will my student be provided with any textbooks? Yes. Textbooks will be distributed on Aug. 6th-8th along with other instructional materials. Students will need their School ID to check out the textbooks.*Student ID’s will be passed out during Chromebook Distribution.
What if my child has an IEP? We are committed to supporting our students and parents and will work together to meet the needs of every student. Case-Managers will soon be in contact to discuss specifics.
What support do I need to give my student? Review assignments with your student. You may need to assist your student with turning on devices and logging in. And most importantly, stay in touch with us. We will get through this together.
Wow! If I miss the Chromebook distribution I will really be missing out on a lot of important resources and information needed for my student. Yes, I’m glad you said that. We want to make sure that all our students are prepared for the first day of school and have all the resources they need. Please contact the office if for any reason you are unable to come.
Next Steps: What to Expect. Keep an eye out for more communication from your teachers via Aeries Communication and Google Classroom. Monday morning we will get started! Expect that there will be some bumps along the way. Take a deep breath, remember it will get easier as time goes on, and take it one day at a time. Our distance learning model will require flexibility from all of us as we explore and pilot new ideas and approaches; we will make adjustments as necessary. We look forward to working with all of you to make this year successful and we invite you to call or visit us if you have any questions or concerns. When visiting the school, we are asking that you please practice social distancing and wear a mask.
The first day of school will be August 10th, 2020.
