EUSD Honors the Life and Legacy of Dolores Huerta

Statement from Eastside Union School District on the Passing of Dolores Huerta

Eastside Union School District joins communities across California in marking the passing of Dolores Huerta, who died on October 28, 2026, at the age of 96.

Ms. Huerta began her career as a teacher in rural California before dedicating her life to improving conditions for farm working families. Over seven decades, she became one of the most recognized figures in California history, and her phrase "Sí se puede" ("Yes, we can") continues to inspire people of all ages to believe in their ability to make a difference.

In accordance with Governor Gavin Newsom's order, flags at all Eastside Union School District sites will be flown at half-staff today, Thursday, October 29, in her honor.

Many of our students and families have personal or family connections to her life and work. We encourage our school communities to use this moment to learn about California history, reflect on the power of education and civic participation, and talk together about how each of us can contribute to our communities.
We extend our condolences to Ms. Huerta's family and all who are mourning her loss.

Dr. Tinisha Hamberlin
Superintendent, Eastside Union School District
